Questions to ask any autism service provider

A practical checklist for caregivers. These questions help you move past marketing language and understand whether a place can actually support your child or family member.

1. Experience & approach

  • How much experience does your team have supporting autistic children / teens / adults?
  • Do you work with non-speaking or minimally speaking clients? What communication tools do you use?
  • Is your approach neurodiversity-affirming, behavioural, developmental, or a mix? Can you explain what that looks like day-to-day?

2. Sensory environment

  • What does the waiting area and therapy / classroom space look and sound like?
  • Do you have a quiet room or low-stimulation option if someone becomes overwhelmed?
  • Can we do a short visit or virtual tour before the first appointment?

3. Staff training & ratios

  • What specific autism-related training have staff completed?
  • What is the typical staff-to-client ratio?
  • Will the same person (or small team) work with us consistently?

4. Caregiver involvement

  • How do you involve parents or caregivers in goal-setting and progress updates?
  • Do you offer coaching or strategies we can use at home / school?
  • How do you handle transitions between providers or into new settings?

5. Availability & logistics

  • Are you currently accepting new clients? What is the typical wait time?
  • Do you offer evenings, weekends, virtual sessions, or home visits?
  • What happens if we need to cancel or pause services?

6. Funding & cost

  • Do you accept OAP (Ontario Autism Program), Passport, or private insurance?
  • Is direct billing available? What does a typical month cost out-of-pocket?
  • Are there sliding-scale or subsidy options?

7. First visit & fit

  • How do you prepare a child or adult for the first appointment?
  • What would make you a good (or not good) fit for our specific needs?
  • Can we speak with another family who has used your services? (References)

You don’t have to ask every question in one call. Start with the ones that matter most for your situation, then dig deeper with the providers who feel like a possible fit.
